"Philosophy is difficult and the difficult thing is to make it look easy; fiction is easy and the easy thing is to make it look difficult (the difficult thing is to make it interesting without making it difficult)." Discuss.

Fiction is easy because anything is possible in fiction. There are no rules in fiction unless you make them up. Philosophy on the other hand is based on and dependent on our perception of reality. It is difficult in the sense that it is restricted to the physics and perceptions of the real natural world. Fiction only becomes difficult when one tries to sell it as real, because then ones fiction must adhere to the same rules that apply to reality to make it believable. But why are we comparing philosophy to fiction? It is not like they are in the same category. Wouldn't it be more accurate to compare fiction to non-fiction. In the fiction, you could have fictional philosophies that correspond to the fictional environment that you have created. But when we speak of philosophy in our everyday usage it usually refers to a real world philosophy that addresses some perceived reality, rather then some fiction. I guess the question would be raised, how can one tell the difference between fiction and reality and their corresponding philosophies.

Making difficult philosophy accessible to the lay person is what I do on our blog. I find it frustrating that philosophy is often categorised as something lofty academics do and that it is deemed as not having a place in the real world.

Trying to make someone see this fiction is not always easy but it is a worthwhile pursuit nonetheless.

are you stating that fiction is easy to write or easy to read?
i think, there are not so many people that can write good fiction. but this may be the kind of work that is easiest to them.
it can be either difficult to read or easy to read, or it may be easy to read to some and difficult to read to others.
be that whatever way, it should look effortless, like ballet, which is also hard to do.

regarding philosophy, may i back sir charles popper and say, you should cut out unnecessary pirouettes and come to the point as straight as possible.
i think it is fair to quote other philosophers, if you know your views to have been already uttered. this makes things a lot simpler.
it is hard to relate different philosophers with each other. i think this is sad.

everyone likes to hear that what he is doing well is difficult.

Good fiction is very difficult to write. Teachers tell their writing students to work hard so their readers won't have to. Isn't that true of any craft? As for philosophers, I wonder how many of them are actually trying to make it look easy? Most of the academic papers I read are loaded with jargon, and repeatedly make reference to other philosophers' works without explaining the ideas themselves. Faced with this, the inexperienced reader won't know whether he is an idiot or the writer is. Maybe this all started with Kant, who was a good philosopher who made it look difficult. Now we're stuck with a bunch of philosophers who make it look difficult, and it's our task to figure out whether they're any good or not. A notable exception is Mr. McGinn, who writes lucidly on challenging topics!

I think writing fiction is more difficult than reading philosophy.
Imagining things that were never seen before or written about does seem very difficult.
I have recently watched a few documentaries with Isac Asimov. After watching so many TV shows with people who seemed like they had something to say, Asimov seemed like fresh air.
Why there are not more people like him?
